Ein Entwurf, sei es in der Kunst oder in der Architektur, beginnt typischerweise mit einem Layout, einem Konzept oder einer Skizze aus dem eine Form entwickelt wird. Am IAK nehmen Design und Entwurf einen Ausgangspunkt im Material, seinen Qualitäten und Möglichkeiten, und die Form entwickelt sich daraus als Konsequenz eines praktischen und handwerklichen Arbeitsprozesses. Wir unterrichten und arbeiten so ortsspezifisch wie möglich. Der umliegende Wald, die Stadt Braunschweig, die Museen und kulturellen Einrichtungen in der Nähe, die vorhandenen Ressourcen, bilden die Grundlage für eine investigative und experimentelle Praxis. In der Kunst, in der künstlerischen Arbeit, ist der Prozess ein Ziel an sich, viel mehr als ein im Voraus bestimmtes Ergebnis. Das Nützliche verbirgt sich oft im Fehlerhaften und ist auf Umwegen oder durch Zufall zu finden. Unser Ziel ist es, die Wahrnehmung auf eine erhöhte Sensibilität für unsere urbane und natürliche Umgebung zu trainieren um deren visuelle und kreative Potenziale erkennen zu können.
Die meisten Schritte der künstlerischen Praxis, wie sie am IAK gelehrt wird, sind kollaborativ und machen kommunikative Fähigkeiten und Wissen über die Kunst zu einem wesentlichen Element unserer Lehre. Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass aus der künstlerischen Praxis gesundes, aber kritischen Denken entwickelt wird und fördern Dialog und verbalisierte Reflexion als integrale Bestandteile unserer täglichen Lehre. ​Vorträge und Workshops von namhaften Künstlern und Kunstpraktikern ergänzen die praktischen und theoretischen Lehrangebote von Professorin Folke Köbberling und ihrem Team

A design process, be it in art or architecture, typically begins with a layout, a concept, a sketch or a design from which a form is developed. At the IAK design takes a starting point in the material, its qualities and possibilities, while form develops as a consequence of the practical and manual work process. We teach and work as site specific as possible. The surrounding forest, the city of Brunswick, the museums and cultural institutions nearby, the resources at hand, provide a basis for our investigative and experimental practices. In art, in making art, the process is a goal in itself much more than a predefined result. The useful often hides within the erroneous and is to be found on detours or by coincidence. It is our goal to train perception to a heightened sensitivity toward our urban and natural surroundings and their visual and creative potentials.
Most steps of the artistic practice taught at the IAK are collaborative, making communicative skills and knowledge about art practice an essential element of our teaching. We strongly believe in the possibility of sound but critical thinking deriving from artistic practice and encourage dialogue and verbalised reflection as an integrated part of our daily teaching. Lectures and work shops by renowned artists and art practitioners complement the practical and theoretical courses of study offered by Professor Folke Köbberling and her team.
